Department of Homeland Security Preparing for End of ‘Title 42’

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says his department is preparing for a potential increase of migrants next month when Title 42 is lifted on the U.S.-Mexico border. Under ‘Title 42’ U.S. border officials turned migrants back to Mexico or their home countries immediately citing the public health crisis. Democrats on capitol hill are worried that rescinding the rule next month is not enough time for the administration to establish an adequate plan to handle the number of migrant crossings that are expected to come with it. Last month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection had 221,303 encounters at the border and has apprehended more than 1 million people this fiscal year beginning in October.
