Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signs ‘Parental Rights in Education’ Bill into Law

Yesterday Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the controversial ‘Parental Rights in Education’ bill into law. Known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill was passed by Florida’s legislature earlier this month and is set to take effect in July. The bill has sparked widespread protests among supporters of the LGBTQ+ community as well as numerous businesses. The new law states that “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.” DeSantis and other Republican lawmakers have said that the measure is reasonable and that parents, not teachers should be responsible for teaching their children about sexual orientation and gender identity.
