Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Biden Administration From Ending Title 42

A federal judge in Louisiana has temporarily blocked the Biden administration from ending Title 42. The administration had been on track to end the public health authority put in place by former President Trump during the Covid-19 pandemic on May 23rd. Under Title 42, border authorities were given the power to turn back migrants to their home countries because of the public health crisis. Judge Robert Summerhays’ order is unlikely to change the situation given that the public health authority remains in place but may throw a wrench in the administration’s plan to move forward. The order comes after more than 20 states asked to block the end of Title 42 and also asked the court to immediately intervene. The Justice Department has declined to comment on the order.
