Viktor Orban Wins Fourth Term as Prime Minister of Hungary
Hungary’s authoritarian leader and longtime Russian ally, Viktor Orban won his fourth consecutive term as Prime Minister yesterday. Orban’s party strengthened their position in parliament when it won 53% of the vote with almost all ballots counted. Orban’s campaign was dominated by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine which put his association with Russian President Putin under scrutiny. In his victory speech he called Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy one of his ‘opponents’ he had to overcome during his campaign. According to a Kremlin spokesperson, Putin congratulated Orban on his victory.
