Horry County Schools Unveils New Mental Health Program

Horry County Schools are trying out a new mental health program for students… The Care Solace Program will be used on a trial basis for the rest of the school year. Superintendent Rick Maxey unveiled the program this past Monday at the school board meeting and said that after talking with other superintendents in the state who have used the program and had success, he decided to bring it to Horry County. The district’s chief officer for student services, Velna Allen, said school officials have seen an increase of students with depression, anxiety and self-harming tendencies in the last few years and that counselors usually have a caseload of 40 to 45 students. The state recommends 20 to 25.
