Fatal Police Shooting In Minnesota Sparks Protests Across The U.S.
At least 40 people were arrested outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department in Minnesota last night. Protests began Sunday to show support after Daunte Wright was shot by a Police Officer during a traffic stop. The officer who shot Wright has been identified by authorities as Kim Potter. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Potter has been with the department for 26 years. She has been placed on administrative leave and body cam footage from the incident has been released. Wright was pulled over for out of date tags and Police discovered an outstanding warrant. While attempting to arrest Wright, he resisted, got back in his vehicle causing Potter to withdraw what she thought was her taser.
On the protest front, Police fired tear gas and stun guns to disperse the crowd that defied curfew last night. Authorities also responded to multiple reports of break-ins and looting. And in Oregon, the Portland Police Department declared a riot late last night after a vigil was held for Wright. About 200 people marched to the city’s Penumbra Kelly Building and started throwing projectiles including bottles, rocks and large fireworks. Police at the building pushed protesters back into the street and deployed flash-bang grenades.
