United Way in Action: SMART Reentry Program
The SMART Reentry Program helps adults returning from incarceration find stable housing and the support they need to stay on their feet.
SMART Reentry Coordinator, Nelvina Jones, was in the studio for United Way in Action.
The SMART Reentry Program helps adults returning from incarceration find stable housing and the support they need to stay on their feet, so they don’t cycle back into jail or prison. It pairs transitional housing with wrap-around services (case management, mental-health and substance-use treatment, employment help, and transportation) and connects people to those supports before release.
J. Reuben Long Detention Center’s Next Steps program, ECHO (housing), United Way of Horry County, A Father’s Place, and Poindexter Counseling, alongside community partners including Palmetto Goodwill, SC Works, Shoreline Behavioral Health, and the Pee Dee Regional Reentry Council are all a part of what makes this program work.
