New Deadline to Fill Out 2020 Census Moved Up to Tomorrow at 11:59 P.M.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Trump Administration’s attempts to terminate the census count early. This year’s count started off normally, but like most everything else, was temporarily suspended in March after the pandemic hit. As a result, the count’s deadline was delayed through October 31st, about a month later than originally intended. But the Census Bureau wanted to stop it earlier. They claim they need more time in order to process all the data to meet another deadline on December 31st. A lower court initially ordered them to keep working through the end of October to ensure a more accurate count, but following an extensive back and forth legal battle, the Supreme Court blocked this lower court decision in a 7-1 vote. The census will now end tomorrow at 11:59 p.m, 15 days earlier than expected despite the pandemic setback. In their dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned “the harms caused by rushing this year’s census count are irreparable” adding, many people will suffer for it over the next ten years.
