President Trump Ousts Election Commission Members
This marks the latest move comes after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that gave the president new personnel authorities.
President Trump has fired members of a bipartisan federal election commission.
The Election Assistance Commission resisted Trump’s efforts to require would-be voters to document their U.S. citizenship before registering.
The White House confirmed the executive action against the members of the commission, which distributes federal grants to states, oversees the testing of voting systems, and maintains the national voter registration forms.
This marks the latest move comes after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that gave the president new personnel authorities to fire members of independent agency boards.
The president removed the commission’s two Democratic members, Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland. The panel’s Republican member, Christy McCormick resigned. Former Republican commissioner Donald Palmer already had left his post voluntarily earlier this year.
