Trump Administration Open To Suspending Federal Gas Tax
The national average gas price has climbed to $4.52 per gallon, up $1.38 from this time a year ago.
The Trump administration is reportedly open to suspending the federal gas tax amid rising fuel prices.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the federal gasoline tax has remained at 18.4-cents per gallon since 1993 and helps fund highway and infrastructure programs.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said they are open to all ideas to lower prices for American consumers and businesses. He added, “We’re working everyday to offset the rise in prices because of a critical conflict in Iran to drive prices down.”
The comments came after several states including Georgia, Indiana, and Utah, have temporarily suspended state gas taxes to provide relief to drivers. Members of Congress have also floated proposals to suspend the federal gas tax temporarily as gas prices climb nationwide.
