Israel Faces Criticism Over Attack That Killed 45 People In Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government was investigating the "tragic accident."

Israel is facing major condemnation after a strike in Gaza killed 45 people when it set off a fire that ripped through a tent city for displaced Palestinians.

Israel officially launched a ground offensive in the city of Rafah earlier this month. The area is where millions of Palestinians fled for safety amid the Israel/Hamas war.

Israel’s Sunday evening’s attack targeted and killed two senior Hamas operative, but it also sparked a fire that Palestinians and many Arab countries have referred to as a “massacre.”

The attack led to protests from Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, and several others, with the African Union chair accusing Israel of violating international law.

A U.S. National Security Council spokesperson said Israel “must take every precaution possible to protect civilians.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government was investigating the “tragic accident” which he told parliament occurred “despite our best efforts” to protect civilians.
