Texas, Iowa Set Aside Funds to Prevent School Shootings
According to research from the National Center for Education Statistics, last school year there were 93 shootings in the United States. Of those, 43 resulted in fatalities while 50 saw injuries. The data also showed there were an additional 50 school shootings reported with no casualties from July 1, 2020 through June 3, 2021. With that being said, the governors of Texas and Iowa have each announced funding being set aside to prevent the next school massacre. On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced $105.5 million to support additional school safety and mental health initiatives through August 31st, 2023. The funding will provide money for bullet-resistant shields, for school districts to purchase silent panic alert technology, and for rapid response training by the advanced law enforcement rapid response training center. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also announced a $100 million investment toward school safety in her state. The funding will benefit Iowa’s 327 school districts and 83 nonpublic and independent schools.
