Horry County Deputy Harmed While Attempting To Arrest Man

"The suspect was combative and continued to resist arrest until two bystanders stepped in to assist," the sheriff's office said.

An Horry County deputy was injured while trying to arrest a wanted man.

It happened Monday in the area of 31st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. A deputy was conducting surveillance and witnessed 54-year-old Charles Rumsey leaving a residence. The deputy ordered him to stop but he fled, prompting a chase. The deputy caught up to rumsey in the parking lot of a nearby T-Mobile store.

“The suspect was combative and continued to resist arrest until two bystanders stepped in to assist,” the sheriff’s office said. It added, “EMS and our law enforcement partners responded. Both the deputy and suspect were treated for minor injuries.”

Rumsey was wanted on drug-related charges and in addition to those, he is now facing a charge of assaulting an officer. He is being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a failure-to-appear charge.
