Alex Murdaugh’s defense team has filed a lawsuit against former county clerk Becky Hill.

Murdaugh’s lawyers announced the civil lawsuit saying that Hill deprived Murdaugh of his right to a fair trial by speaking to the jury.

The attorneys also questioned why Hill was not being charged by prosecutors, because interfering with a jury is a criminal offense.

The money from the lawsuit will go toward people that Murdaugh personally owes money to and aims to hold Hill accountable for her actions.

The lawsuit comes after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh’s murder convictions after the court found Hill’s remarks to jurors violated his rights.

The court also found that the judge should not have allowed evidence of Murdaugh’s financial crimes to be presented in the murder trial.

Murdaugh was convicted of killing his wife and son. The court’s decision calls for a retrial.
