17 Americans Return To The U.S. After Hantavirus Outbreak On Cruise Ship

The American passengers will go to the National Quarantine Unit for assessment and monitoring.

17 Americans have evacuated the cruise ship that was affected by the Hantavirus and have been flown back to the U.S..

The rare outbreak linked to a South Atlantic cruise ship has caused three deaths and multiple infections, mainly involving the Andes strain. That strain spreads through person-to-person contact rather than rodents.

At least 34 passengers got off the ship before the outbreak was confirmed. Officials are still searching for those individuals to be tested. One of those passengers has been located and tested positive for the strain.

One of 17 Americans tested positive without symptoms and another person had mild symptoms. One passenger was transported to a biocontainment unit. Others will go to the National Quarantine Unit for assessment and monitoring. An investigation remains underway.
