HCPD Captain Claims He Was Forced Out Of Job For Being Whistleblower

Attorneys say Furr was asked to retire early after he reported concerns regarding wrongful actions.

The longtime Horry County Police Department captain claims he was forced out of his job for being a whistleblower.

Danny Furr served the department for over 20 years. Attorneys with Axelrod and Associates say Furr was asked to retire early after he reported concerns regarding wrongful actions within the department to his superior.

Attorney Jonny McCoy said Furr was treated unfairly after he raised concerns and was placed on probation. He was also banned from training incoming officers as a result of his report.

McCoy said Furr’s actions were protected speech. He added that Furr acted as a whistleblower and criticized the department’s response. McCoy claims that Furr was speaking up against the higher ups and was forced to retire with intentions to embarrass and ostracize him.

The attorneys believe higher-ranking officials in the department should be held accountable. A complaint was filed on Wednesday. The department has not yet commented.
