The Get: Panthers President Danny Morrison
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The field has been re-sodded. The lines drawn. The logos painted. On Sunday, all eyes will be on Charlotte and Bank of America Stadium. “There’ll be some 50 million people watching the game on Sunday,” says Panthers president Danny Morrison. Lucky for us, Cam Newton has a history of playing well on a big stage. Morrison expects more of the same from the star QB.
Morrison says, “Cam certainly has been in some big games, national championship games, and so I think the big stage, a lot of time, people elevate their play. What I love about him more than anything else is he just cares about one thing, and that’s winning.”
The San Francisco 49ers do, too, after losing to the Panthers 10 to 9 in Candlestick Park on November 10th. And, as one reporter discovered in a locker room interview with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, he holds a bit of a grudge. In a video clip courtesy KNBR, the reporter asks, “Colin, you and Cam were in the same draft, he was number one, does that motivate you to prove you deserve to be drafted as high as he was?” Kaepernick replied curtly, “Ah, it’s not something I’ll forget.”
Morrison says, “They’re two really good football teams, and that’s what you’re gonna get this time of year, and we just gotta execute and play what we call Panthers football.”
The last time the Panthers went to the playoffs was in 2008. The last—and only—time they went to the Super Bowl was in 2003. Fans, the Carolinas, and the Big Cat are hoping 2014 is our year. WCCB News @ Ten anchor Morgan Fogarty asked Morrison, “Mr. (Jerry) Richardson is 77. He had a heart transplant in 2009. I know that it’s important for him to see the team not only go to the Super Bowl but win the Super Bowl. How close do you think this team is to doing that?”
“Well he’s been striving for that all the time. He’s a competitor, he wants us to do well, but wants us to do it the right way. You elevate during the post season, and I think you’ll find our team doing that,” says Morrison.
Speaking of elevated play, Steve Smith says he will be on the field on Sunday, after suffering a knee sprain two weeks ago.
