CCU Student Dies After Highway 544 Hit-And-Run
Two Coastal Carolina University students were struck by a drunk driver while attempting to cross 544 around midnight.
One of the victims of a hit-and-run has since died from the injuries she sustained.
21-year-old Kalina Trent of New Jersey died on Saturday following a crash that happened on Aug. 16. The incident unfolded on Highway 544 near Elvington Loop. Two Coastal Carolina University students were struck by a drunk driver while attempting to cross 544 around midnight.
17-year-old Mauricio Palafox-Correa was speeding when he hit the pedestrians. He fled the scene but was later arrested following a separate crash in the Conway area. He was initially charged with two counts of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury and two counts of hit-and-run involving great bodily injury. The investigation remains underway.
