The average cost of a gallon of gas continues to rise. There are still some areas where $4 a gallon is rare. From North Dakota to Texas, averages are no higher than $3.71 a gallon. Currently, there are 18 states plus Washington D.C. where the price is greater than $4 which includes all of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as well as the West Coast, Nevada, Arizona, Illinois, Alaska and Hawaii with statewide averages above $4. The highest prices however are being seen in California where the average is $5.29 a gallon.
