Security in Washington D.C. Heightened Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union Address
Law enforcement is ramping up security ahead of tonight’s State of the Union Address. Officials say that the Russian invasion of Ukraine, potential protests of President Biden and a possible trucker convoy headed to the Washington area are all factors for the heightened security measures. Under the federal designation, the U.S. Secret Service is the lead agency for the design and implementation of the operational security plan, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency is responsible for response and recovery operations and the FBI will be the lead for investigative work and counterterrorism. The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia will receive help from the Philadelphia and Baltimore Police Departments and Capitol Police are on alert as well with Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations providing aerial support to the Secret Service during the event. The skies above Washington will also be restricted according to a bulletin from the FAA. 700 members of the National Guard and 50 tactical vehicles will also be on hand.
