Medina Spirit Disqualified, Mandaloun Named Winner of 2021 Kentucky Derby

After a 9 month investigation, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced yesterday that Medina Spirit’s victory at the 2021 Kentucky Derby has been disqualified. Medina Spirit failed a drug test after winning the race. The horse died in December as it was finishing a workout at the Santa Anita Park racetrack. In addition, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission also announced a 90-day suspension of trainer Bob Baffert who trained Medina Spirit, he was fined $7,500 and plans to appeal the decision. The commission also said the winners purse of $1.86 million must be returned. Following that announcement, Churchill Downs named ‘Mandaloun’ who placed second in the Derby the winner.
