Sandy Hook Families, Remington Reach $73 Million Settlement
The families of five children and four adults killed in the Sandy Hook shooting have reached a $73 million settlement with gun manufacturer Remington. The settlement comes over 7 years after the families filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the company which manufactures the bushmaster AR-15 style rifle that was used in the shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead in Newton Connecticut. In the settlement, the families also obtained and can make public ‘thousands of pages’ of internal company documents that prove Remington’s wrongdoing and carry information to help prevent future mass shootings according to attorneys for the families. The families sued the company in 2014 and alleged it should be held partially responsible for the shooting because of it’s marketing strategy. Lawyers contended that the company marketed rifles by showcasing the militaristic qualities of the rifle and reinforcing the image of a combat weapon. In 2019 the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to take up an appeal by Remington which allowed the suit to move forward.
