Two are dead and dozens more are injured after an acetic acid leak at a chemical plant near La Porte Texas last night. According to La Porte’s public information officer Lee Woodward, the initial call came in around 7:30 p.m. Harris County Fire Marshal’s office spokeswoman Rachel Neutzler confirmed the two fatalities and a statement from the company noted that at least four people sustained burns.
According to Neutzler in addition to the fatalities, 35 people suffered minor injuries and five were transported to an area hospital with more serious symptoms, two of which were listed in critical condition. According to Harris County Fire Marshal Laurie Christensen the leak involved a chemical acid used in food grade vinegar.
