Over 400 Shootings Happened in the U.S. During July 4th Weekend
At least 150 people were killed by gun violence in over 400 shootings across the country this past weekend which includes three mass shootings. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, from Friday to Sunday, there were 26 victims in 21 shootings in New York which according to the New York Police Department is a decrease from the same time last year when 30 people were shot in 25 shootings. On July 4th alone, NYC experienced 12 shootings with 13 victims and last year there were eight shootings and eight victims. So far this year in New York, there have been 767 shootings with 885 victims. Chicago also experienced a rise in gun violence this weekend as 83 people were shot which includes 14 fatalities. Included in the injuries were a 5 and 6 year old. One of the 14 fatally shot was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard who recently completed Army basic training, two police officers were also injured and are expected to survive.
