Biden Dispatches Top Officials to Mexico and Central America
President Biden is dispatching top officials to Mexico and Central America as the crisis at the border continues to surge. The influx of migrants traveling to the U.S. to seek asylum has overwhelmed border facilities and driven the national conversation on immigration. National Security Council official Roberta Jacobson traveled to Mexico yesterday to ‘develop an effective and humane plan of action to manage migration’. The White House’s Senior Director for the western hemisphere Juan Gonzalez will travel to Guatemala and discuss the ‘root cases of migration in the region and build a more hopeful future in the region.’ Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the state department has run more than 17,000 radio ads across Latin America and more than 500 ads on social media telling migrants to stay in their home countries. Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Krysten Sinema of Arizona wrote letters to encourage Biden to step up his efforts. Biden said Sunday that he would be traveling to the border but Psaki declined to say when that trip would take place.
