The City of Miami is Under Curfew as Spring Breakers Flock to Florida
Florida has seen an uptick in visitors in recent weeks including those on spring break according to the Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements. Visitors from across the U.S. have been flocking to some of the state’s most popular beaches in the daytime and mingling in the bars and restaurants at night. On Saturday, just hours after Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber declared a State of Emergency and set an 8 p.m/. curfew, Miami Beach Police fired pepper balls into the crowds of partiers and arrested at least a dozen people. The curfew was placed to crack down on spring breakers who officials say are ‘out of control’. Mayor Gelber stated the crowds in the city were more than they could handle. On Sunday a Tweet from the Miami Beach Police Department stated that more than 50 people had been arrested and eight firearms were confiscated over the weekend. The 8 p.m. curfew and road closures in the entertainment district will be in effect until tomorrow. The city manager will have the option to extend it for two more week long increments through April 13th. About 12% of Florida’s population has been fully vaccinated.
