After Hours-Long Weather Delay, a Major Upset at Daytona 500

NASCAR fans who braved a long weather delay were rewarded with a dramatic victory after midnight at the Daytona 500.
The race ended early this morning in a fiery crash on the final lap that took out a number of cars. Michael McDowell escaped the wild wreckage to win his first Harley J. Earl Trophy. The 2021 Daytona 500 also began with plenty of excitement. A crash in the fourteenth lap eliminated 16 of the 40-car line-up, including pole position driver Alex Bowman. In the afternoon a thunderstorm forced the race to stop for several hours. About 30-thousand fans watched the race live at the track, which can hold 100-thousand spectators. Attendance was limited due to the pandemic. Sunday’s race marks McDowell’s fourteenth year competing at Daytona, and it’s his first ever win. He’ll take home about 1.5 million dollars for the victory.
