Newly Sworn-In Justice Amy Coney Barrett Hears First Arguments
Following her unprecedented nomination process, Amy Coney Barrett has officially begun hearing arguments as the newly sworn-in Supreme Court justice. Her first case yesterday was in regards to a law meant to determine what exactly the government is required to disclose in response to Freedom of Information Act requests. She was the last of the justices to speak, going off dissenting order, as the Supreme Court continues to hear cases via teleconference. Prior to arguments, Chief Justice John Roberts welcomed Barrett and wished her “a long and happy career.” Today the Supreme Court will hear a case concerning juvenile life sentences for murder. Also fast-approaching is the vote on the Affordable Care Act. Not to mention any possible election dispute that may be presented before them within the next month, should it come to that. Seeing as President Trump has now selected three of the current sitting justices, and the court leans six to three with a conservative majority, there are fears from the left a ruling may not be fair.
