U.S. Justice Department Announces Largest ‘Darknet’ Opioid Takedown in History
The U.S. Justice Department announced they helped execute the largest international ‘Darknet’ opioid takedown in history. “Operation DisrupTor” began nine months ago and targeted drug traffickers selling products via the Darknet which is a highly encrypted and anonymous network. 179 people were apprehended across seven countries and more than $6.5 million in cash and currency was seized. Approximately 500 kilograms of drugs, such as fentanyl, oxycodone, methamphetamine, and hydrocodone and 63 illegal guns were also recovered. 274 kilograms of those narcotics and 121 of the arrests were reported in the U.S. It’s believed tens of thousands of U.S. residents were supplied with the illegal substances. Other countries involved include Germany, Canada, Netherlands, the UK, Austria, and Sweden. Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said they hope the operation serves as a warning to other traffickers “that there will be no safe haven for drug dealing in cyberspace.”
