UPDATE: Derek Chauvin’s Charges Increased, Other Three Officers Expected to be Charged
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has just announced former officer Derek Chauvin who was previously charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd has now had his charges increased to second-degree murder. Additionally, he plans on charging the remaining three former officers Thomas Lane, J.A. Keung and Tou Thao who were also involved.
State leaders, lawyers and more in Minnesota are not taking George Floyd’s death lightly. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who has been appointed to lead the prosecution on his case, has announced that he intends to charge the remaining three officers involved in Floyd’s death. This is expected to come as early as this afternoon. Furthermore, while he did not comment on whether former Officer Derek Chauvin will face greater charges or not, he did say he plans to charge all four to “the highest degree of accountability that the law and the facts will support.” The Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education has also just voted to end their contract with the department. Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz declared yesterday the Minnesota Department of Human Rights has filed a civil rights lawsuit against their police departments statewide. An investigation will be launched to review “policies, procedures and practices over the last 10 years to determine if the department has utilized systemic discriminatory practices towards people of color.”
