Michigan Dam Failures Force At Least Ten Thousand Residents to Evacuate
At least one county in Michigan is in a state of emergency after two river dams failed. The state has been experiencing heavy rains and flash flooding recently which caused the Sanford and Edenville dams to fail. About ten thousand people have been asked to evacuate immediately from midland county as they project certain areas could be under 9 feet of water in less than 15 hours. Thankfully no deaths or injuries have been reported, however it’s estimated around 3,500 homes will be heavily impacted by the flooding. The National Guard and the state’s emergency operations center have both been activated. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said, “We are anticipating a historic high of water level. To go through this in the midst of a global pandemic is almost unthinkable.” Emergency crews are trying to screen people who are staying in temporary shelters. They are also trying their best to provide masks for everyone.
