The U.S. Geological Service recorded the epicenter of the quake to be about 4.7 miles deep and near Area 51 in the western part of the state. It was initially recorded as a 6.4 but was then upgraded to a 6.5. At least six sizable aftershocks have followed, including two estimated to have 5.4 magnitudes. Most people were asleep when the incident occurred and mostly detailed their annoyance at being woken up with their personal items knocked onto the floor.
