Federal Judge Rules New York Democratic Presidential Primary Must be Held

A judge has ruled the New York presidential primary will take place as scheduled. This decision comes after Democrats on the New York State Board of Elections voted to cancel the event all together. They had previously voted to approve the removal of all presidential candidates from the ballot who have already suspended their campaigns. This left former Vice President Joe Biden as the sole candidate to vote for. Therefore, the board thought the primary was moot and wanted to cancel it over fears of the pandemic. Along with reinstating the primary, the board must also “reinstate to the democratic primary ballot those presidential and delegate candidates who were duly qualified as of April 26.” The election will be held on it’s postponed date of June 23rd. Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang said, “I’m glad that a federal judge agreed that depriving millions of New Yorkers of the right to vote was wrong.” The board has declined to comment on the issue.
