5.7 Magnitude Causes Thousands to Lose Power in Utah
A 5.7 earthquake hit Utah yesterday, about ten miles west of Salt Lake City. Dozens of aftershocks have also hit since then. Luckily, no injures or deaths have been reported, but it’s believed this was the state’s most powerful quake since 1992. Power was lost to tens of thousands of people and aerial photos show minor damage was done to multiple buildings and other structures. Flights coming to and from Utah airports were canceled or diverted elsewhere. However, as of yesterday afternoon they did resume as scheduled. Also affected by the quake was the Utah Public Health Lab. Currently, work at the lab has been suspended while damage done to the building remains under assessment. This concerns many as the coronavirus continues to spread across the nation. It’s reported no samples or equipment was destroyed and while COVID-19 testing will not be allowed in the building for now, they are continuing testing in commercial labs.
