Coronavirus Continues to Heavily Impact South Carolina

There is one new possible case of coronavirus in South Carolina. That brings our number of presumptive cases to eight with two confirmed. It’s reported the most recent case is that of a Lancaster County woman who has no known travel history or contact with another case. She is currently in isolation at a hospital. As cases increase, so does concern. A number of events have been canceled or postponed. Local schools and universities have also extended their spring breaks or announced in-person classes will become online sessions instead. A full list of these events and schools will be posted on our website after the show.

HERE IS THE FULL LIST OF COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES IMPACTED BY COVID-19:

College of Charleston – As of right now, nothing has changed but college officials are closely monitoring the situation and evaluating their options concerning in-person classes.

The Citadel – Spring furlough begins Friday. Members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets are scheduled to return March 22nd with classes resuming March 23rd. The school has contacted students abroad and asked them to return to the U.S. Students will be able to continue their coursework online for the time being.

Charleston Southern University – Their spring break will not be extended and students are expected to resume class March 16th. However, in an effort to be proactive over the outbreak, CSU will hold online instruction the week of March 16-20. Students are encouraged to stay home during this time and resume classes as normal the following week. 

Claflin University – They have extended spring break for students through March 22nd with classes resuming as normal March 23rd. Residence halls will reopen on March 22nd at 2 p.m.

Coker University – All classes and activities will continue as normal. Study abroad trips planned for May to Greece and Italy have been canceled.

Trident Tech – Classes will operate on a normal schedule as the school closely and carefully monitors the situation. Study Abroad Programs have been suspended through May 31st, with domestic travel outside the tri-county area suspended through April 3rd. All travel restrictions are subject to change as necessary. The college has also cancelled the following events:

• Retiree Reception and Luncheon on March 18
• Nursing Alumni Event on March 19
• Chief Academic Officers/Chief Student Services Officers Joint Meeting on March 20
• Youth Apprenticeship Conference on March 30-31

University of South Carolina – Classes will be canceled through March 22nd. Students are encouraged, but not forbidden, to stay off campus through April 3rd. From March 23 through April 3, all in-person lectures, discussion sections, seminars and other similar classroom settings will be moved online. The university will remain open, including residence halls, food services and limited transit. All athletics will continue as normal, however spectators and fans will not be allowed to attend them through March 30th.

 University of South Carolina, Aiken – Their spring break has been extended to March 16th through March 20th, but the university will remain open including residence halls and dining services. In-person classes will transition to online classes once school resumes Monday. Athletics will also resume as normal, with caution.

Clemson University – in-person instruction will be moved online following their spring break until at least March 30th. The school will remain open and operational during this time. 

South Carolina State University – a moratorium has been placed on all international university-sponsored travel for students, faculty and staff as they continue to closely monitor the outbreak.

Coastal Carolina University – spring break will be extended through March 20th with Classes resuming as normal on March 23.

Furman University – Spring break will be extended through March 22nd. All on-campus classes and activities will be canceled with instruction moving online beginning March 23rd. This will last at least through March 27th. Athletics will also be canceled or postponed through march 30th. Pending clarity on the President’s travel ban, they will decide how to move forward with students studying abroad.

Charleston School of Law – Will continue on a normal operating schedule with no extensions or cancelations. The school will monitor the situation closely.
