Supreme Court Divided Over Abortion Case
The now conservative majority Supreme Court appears to be torn over their first major abortion case. A Louisiana law, which has been pending since this appeal, would require doctors obtain certain “privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where the abortion is performed.” Louisiana lawmakers argue it is necessary to provide more competent care but many of those opposed to this new bill have pointed out that it would limit the amount of doctors in the entire state who could perform the procedure to just one. This case is nearly identical to another that was proposed in 2016 by Texas and ultimately rejected. However, since then the court has witnessed the additions of conservatives Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has sent them a warning in light of the split case saying, “You will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
