Latest Case of Coronavirus in U.S. May Be Result of “Community Spread”

A newly reported case of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. could be the first instance of “community spread”. The CDC says a California resident who tested positive had no recent history of travel or exposure to another known patient. This leads them to believe the virus is now moving through communities by means of an unknown source. They have also said it is possible the patient unknowingly came into contact with an infected traveler. However, the uncertainty has raised many new concerns over what the CDC considers an imminent spread within the U.S. While the patient is being treated in a Sacramento hospital, President Trump has placed Vice President Pence in charge of the U.S. coronavirus response. U.S. bio-tech firm Moderna also announced it’s ready to begin first tests on a possible vaccine just six weeks after they started work on it. They hope initial trials will begin in April but full approvals will take at least a year.
