2019 Set Record-High For Gun-Related Violence
Concluding a record-high year of mass killings, at least ten separate shootings took place across the country that resulted in five deaths and numerous injuries between New Years Eve and New Years Day.
More than a dozen people were wounded in Cleveland overnight, including one fatality. Two shootings took place at night clubs in Florida and Texas that ended in the deaths of four people. In Des Moines, Iowa, a fourteen-year-old boy was shot and killed. And in New York, a man was found dead from a gun shot wound and sparked their first murder investigation of the decade. Most of these cities have experienced a recent decline in crime. But New Year’s usually sees an increase in gun violence, largely due to intoxication. Multiple accidental deaths occurred alone from stray bullets after celebratory gun shots were set off. The number of shootings that have taken place in 2019 outweighed the number of days in the year.
