Carjacking Victim Killed After Being Mistaken as Perpetrator by Police
One deputy has been fired and another put on indefinite leave after a man believed to be a carjacker was killed while being apprehended in California. Deputies Charlie Blount and Jason Little engaged victim David Ward in an apparent car chase that lasted thirty minutes and at one point reached 73 miles per hour. Body footage showed the officers struggle to drag him through the vehicle’s window by pulling on his hair and tasing him. They eventually pulled him out and violently smashed his head against the car door. Both officers claimed in the video that Ward was resisting and even bit them. Moments later, one of the officers noticed Ward wasn’t breathing and they attempted CPR. However, Ward was not a carjacker. In fact, he’d been the victim of a carjacking three days earlier and had even been pistol whipped. Police are unsure why Ward seemed to evade police if he was innocent and say they suspect he might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol but none of that has been confirmed.
