Lumbee Tribe Rejects Constitution To Allow Casino
The tribe was asked to decide whether to allow gaming operations on tribal lands. A majority of voters said no to the casino.
Voters of the Lumbee Tribe considered a historic decision Tuesday.
Voters cast ballots on a proposed amendment that would allow for a casino in southeastern North Carolina. The proposal came after the Lumbee Tribe gained full federal recognition in December.
Supporters said the measure could have brought major economic opportunities and new revenue for tribal programs and services. Opponents argued that changing the constitution to allow gaming was the wrong move for the tribe.
