Karmelo Anthony Sentenced To 35 Years For Fatal Track Meet Stabbing
Now, 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony was convicted in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old athlete from a rival school during a track meet last year.
A closely watched trial that drew national attention wrapped up Tuesday in Texas.
Now, 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. He was convicted in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old athlete from a rival school during a track meet last year.
During the seven-day trial, prosecutors called 21 witnesses. The trial drew crowds of onlookers, prompting a heavy law enforcement presence.
Some Anthony supporters called the verdict unjust and racist. However, both sides’ lawyers argued the killing itself had nothing to do with race.
Prosecutors said Anthony brought a knife to the 2025 competition. He used it to fatally stab 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in the chest after a confrontation.
In court, the defense said that Metcalf shoved Anthony because Anthony would not leave the other team’s tent during a rainy competition.
