S.C. Supreme Court Overturns Alex Murdaugh’s Murder Convictions

The S.C. Supreme Court overturned the convictions citing jury tampering and ordered a new trial.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions.

The 57-year-old disgraced Lowcountry lawyer was convicted of murdering his wife and son in March of 2023. A jury found him guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime for the June 2021 killings.

Murdaugh received two life sentences for the murder charges and separately pleaded guilty to dozens of financial crimes and is serving concurrent state and federal sentences of 27 and 40 years.

Murdaugh’s attorneys appealed the murder convictions, saying the trial was tainted by former County Clerk Becky Hill’s improper comments to jurors, failures at trial and more.

On Wednesday, the S.C. Supreme Court overturned the convictions citing jury tampering and ordered a new trial.
