Officials Work To Investigate Hantavirus Outbreak On Cruise Ship

Of the six people affected, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

The Hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship has left 149 people stranded on the west coast of Africa.

The World Health Organization said that one case of Hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, while five additional suspected cases are pending. Of the six people affected, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

The vessel remains off the coast of Cape Verde as authorities work to determine whether the cases are connected and when those requiring medical care will be allowed to disembark.

Oceanwide Expeditions, which operates the ship, released a timeline of the incident saying the first death occurred on April 11. At this time authorities are still working to confirm if the Hantavirus is the cause of the deaths and illnesses. The people on board represent over 20 nationalities including 17 Americans.
