Son Arrested After Stabbing 81-Year-Old Mother To Death

58-year-old Kevin Athanasopoulos, was arrested later that night after a brief police pursuit

One man was arrested following a stabbing in the Galivants Ferry area of Horry County.

Around 6pm on Tuesday, police found 81-year-old Ruth Athanasopoulos deceased in a bathroom inside her home in the 500 block of Highway 712 while conducting a welfare check.

Her son, 58-year-old Kevin Athanasopoulos, was arrested later that night after a brief police pursuit along Highway 501. He admitted to stabbing his mother numerous times in the head and torso.

Kevin has been charged with murder and failure to stop for blue lights. He is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center with a court appearance scheduled for June 5. An investigation remains underway.
