Myrtle Beach Pelicans Are Here To Stay!
Members voted 6-1 in favor of finalizing a 30-year lease agreement for Pelicans Stadium.
It has officially been decided that the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will stay on the Grand Strand.
The city council met Tuesday for a final reading on the matter. Members voted 6-1 in favor of finalizing a 30-year lease agreement for Pelicans Stadium.
The future of the team’s presence in the area has been in limbo for several months.
The city and Horry County previously owned the ballpark split 70-30. However, the county decided it no longer wanted to own a 30% stake and offered $8.25 million as a buyout.
On Tuesday, Pelicans chairman and managing partner offered an additional $100,000 in rent for the first 10 years making up for the lack of funds after the county backed out.
The Myrtle Beach City Council amended and approved a new lease agreement, which will have the Pelicans paying $850,000 per year in rent for 20 years, and then increasing to $950,000 for the last 10 years.
