President Biden’s Opening Speech At NATO Summit Highlights Ukraine’s Needs
The speech came just a day after a Russian strike in Ukraine killed at least 39 people including four children.
President Biden kicked off the NATO Summit Tuesday with an opening speech.
During his speech, the president highlighted Ukraine’s needs during Russia’s ongoing attempt to take over its territory.
Biden said NATO has grown stronger and that Russia is “failing” in its war. He vowed the alliance will continue standing up for freedom amid a global rise in threats.
The speech came just a day after a Russian strike in Ukraine killed at least 39 people including four children.
Biden announced that Ukraine will receive five additional air defense units to help defend themselves. He said, “The war will end with Ukraine remaining a free and independent country.”
Ukraine is unlikely to secure membership into the alliance this year due to the ongoing war which would drag all 32 NATO members into it by triggering a defense article. However, the U.S. and other allies are expected to signal that Ukraine will be a member one day and to ramp up support for the country’s defense.
