A massive landslide occurred in Papua New Guinea leaving as many as 2,000 people believed to be buried.

The landslide happened on Friday in the mountainous Enga region in northern Papua New Guinea.

Tons of rock and mud smashed into over 150 homes as locals slept.

Rescuers have struggled to reach such a remote part of what is already one of Asia’s poorest nations leaving locals with little to work with as they dig through the collapsed mountainside with whatever tools they have including their hands.

The United Nations has projected as many as 670 people have died so far. However, the full death toll is unknown because only a few bodies have been recovered.

It is unclear what caused the landslide but missions are underway to search for and rescue any survivors.
