A criminal investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading up to the fatal collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
On March 26, a container ship struck a pillar of the Baltimore bridge resulting in the collapse and the death of six people.
The Dali vessel departed Baltimore’s port early that morning with cargo destined for Sri Lanka. It lost power before reaching open water which is why it could not steer away from the pillar.
The investigation will include an inquiry into whether the ship experienced power issues before starting its voyage. It will also look into whether all federal laws were followed leading up to the crash and collapse.
The six people who died were reportedly construction workers. They were attempting to fill potholes on the bridge at the time of the incident. A fourth body was recovered Monday. Two more remain unaccounted for but are presumed dead.
