House Committee Advances Bill Intended To Ban TikTok Nationwide
The bill would prohibit TikTok from U.S. app stores unless the social media platform is unlinked from its parent company ByteDance.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted unanimously to advance a bill Thursday.
The measure could lead to a nationwide ban against TikTok on all electronic devices, renewing lawmakers’ challenge to the popular social media app.
The bill would prohibit TikTok from U.S. app stores unless the social media platform is unlinked from its parent company ByteDance.
The company would have 165 days to sell TikTok. If it’s not divested by that date, it would be illegal for app store operators to make it available for download.
The efforts are over fears that China is using TikTok to spy on the U.S. and collect data.
The bill will now head to the House floor for a vote.
The issue has been ongoing for sometime now though ByteDance has claimed TikTok should not be feared.
