Music Might Make You Spend More at Stores on Weekdays

Music makes shoppers feel better...which helps them linger in a store and shop more.

Background music could make you spend more money while shopping…but only on weekdays. In a recent study, researchers examined shoppers at three supermarkets in Sweden. On some days the supermarkets played background music. On other days, they didn’t. They found on weekdays…shoppers spent an average of $23.31 per person when background music was played, compared to $14.96 when there is no music. Researchers say that’s because people are more “mentally and physically depleted” during the week. Music makes shoppers feel better…which helps them linger in a store and shop more. But, on the weekend, many are already relaxed.
